About Jon

This is the blog of Jon, a passionate wandering soul who left the confines of the United State to find adventure in Ecuador two years ago.
In the States I worked in the hospitality business learning the trade from some of the best in that business.
These are people who would comp your room if you had trouble sleeping, give you a thirty dollar gift card if you didn´t like the service, and generally made a rule of going out of their way for people.
Since I have been in Ecuador I have brought this experience to the Secret garden Hostel, Finn McCool´s Irish travellers bar, and I currently work at Uncle Ho´s in the new town.
Living on sixty dollars a week isn´t easy!  But it is possible and makes travelling here more important and worthwhile.  I appreciate the genuine people I have found here who are living and involved in interesting things that benefit travellers and the communities of Ecuador.
This blog is a sort of thank you to all the people who have helped me make my dream of living abroad a reality.  Without these people and the places and things that they are doing, I couldn´t of stayed here so long.

Please contact me at savvytravellerecuador@gmail.com if you are planning a trip to Ecuador and want help from the people who have made the difference here for me!

Having the right contact here is as important as word of mouth is traveling in South America.

If you’re looking something specific, try searching for the Galapagos, hostels, or volunteering to see the articles I´ve written on these subjects!

As of a few months ago I have been managing the South American Explorers Club in Quito.  We provide services for members which include baggage storage, mail pick up, access to trip reports and club information.   We also offer presentations and events utilizing people’s experience working, living and travelling in Ecuador to pub quizzes and weekly events.

  1. Hey Jon, nice work. We just got some free air miles tickets off a credit card offer and for 30,000 miles each we are flying RT to Guyaquil and staying in SA for 3 months. Over the years we have traveled to 48 countries. In 2004 we started posting on Traveljournals.net, and by their count to date we are number 1 in visitors with over 4 million hits.
We have been to Africa 6 times, and favor traveling in southern Africa by bus and staying at bush camps in our little dome tent. Have only been to Brazil in SA though as a child my wife lived in an oil camp in Venezuela.
Yours is one of the most interesting sites we seen since we began looking into traveling in Ecuador and surrounding countries. We spent most our life in Austin and live music is an interest to us. Interesting to see your sticker about Uncle Ho’s.

This past June we spent another month at Flatdogs Camp in Zambia with elephants and hippos walking through the camp. Our camping fee was $18 a day. In Costa Rica we like Montezuma on the coast, and stay at Luna Llena with the monkeys and the guest kitchen and awesome view for $35 a night. Would like to find a place like that .Would love to find town or backpackers or some place where we could hang out for two weeks to a month and walk around to photograph wildlife. Would need to have a bar where we could meet other travelers or a bar nearby. Heh.

    Keep up the good work.
